D3 Heartbleed Update
As mentioned in previous newsletters, protecting the confidentiality of client information is one of D3’s top priorities. In order to access data maintained by D3, employees are required to have two factor authentication; a login and password, and a physical or virtual one-time key. This requirement is one of the many tools that we use to ensure client information is kept confidential.
Having two-factor authentication protects our client data from threats like the Heartbleed bug. This bug infects what were thought to be secure https:\\ websites that use Open SSL library security. Our software vender, that hosts our client portals, does not use Open SSL, and was not susceptible to the Heartbleed bug. Additionally, Fidelity was not susceptible to the Heartbleed bug.
In conjunction with our quarterly 401(k) review, we will review your 401k websites to evaluate if they were susceptible to the Heartbleed bug. We will follow up all clients where we manage your 401k plan with an additional email next week with our analysis and recommendations.
The Heartbleed bug is one of the biggest security threats the internet has ever seen. Many popular websites and services that were thought to be secure could have potentially exposed usernames, password, and credit card numbers over the past two years. We recommend checking with any company in which you do transactions online to determine if they were susceptible to this threat. At a minimum you should monitor your bank accounts to make sure there are no unfamiliar transactions and for maximum precaution you should change your passwords on these sites.
As always, if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to call the office at (630) 271-0033. Thank you for your confidence in D3 Financial Counselors where “We serve our clients by providing Integrity, Trust, Wisdom and Confidence.
